Adoption of EVs is growing at an astronomical rate and nothing indicates the trend will slow down any time soon. But if anything could stunt the growth, it is the lack of charging infrastructure. According to McKinsey’s 2020 ACES consumer survey, EV drivers state that there aren’t enough public charging stations. This, raises a lot of concerns, primarily, the fear of running out of electricity (range anxiety) on a journey and not being able to find a charging point at the right time; especially, in remote areas, which have been left behind in the installations of access to public EV charging stations. Unfortunately, the growth of the EV market is significantly held back by the inability to grow the charging grid.

To that end, the need of the hour is an accessible and robust network of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure that makes it easy for EV drivers to identify available charging points and charge their vehicles when they need it. This is where Power Hero casts its magic.

The California-based clean-energy company delivers a unique patented technology that focuses on networking the grid, thereby, enabling automotive manufacturers to solve the capacity problem associated with EV charging grids. What makes Power Hero’s CameoTM and ePortTM unique is the fact that they can retrofit any charging station or electrical access point into a networked EV charging station. Esmond Goei, co-founder, chairman, and CEO, Power Hero, says, “With Power Hero, consumers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they can navigate to a charging station and know it’s available before getting there to find out otherwise.”

SCALING CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR EVS

Another significant challenge within the EV market is that not all EV charging points are networked and, hence, EV drivers cannot see its availability or access it remotely. The ability to see the availability and even queue up and reserve charging stations serves as a far more efficient alternative because EV charging isn’t instantaneous like filling up gasoline. It can take as little as 30 minutes or more than 12 hours for an EV to charge. This depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point. “Using Power Hero, consumers can reserve a charging station as well as manage access and transactions,” asserts Robert Kent, co-founder, vice-chairman, and CMO, Power Hero. Furthermore, people would want to park and top-off their EVs while they are out and about at work or dining or shopping. In such situations, networked chargers that can be reserved are a critical option.

According to many experts, the real deal-killer of EV adoption, especially for city and apartment dwellers, there a dearth of chargers where they park their cars.

Landlords who rent out apartments and condos have no way to provision low-cost, time-shared solutions like basic level-2 charging or 110V outlets to tenants. This is where the ability to network existing solutions will make the grid more efficient. Especially with infrastructure slowing down due to supply chain, networking and efficiency becomes more critical.

At its core, Power Hero’s ePortTM is a plug-and-play device that can be plugged into an ordinary 110V outlet and converted into an option people can reserve for overnight EV charging and more. Elucidating further on the aspect, Goei draws the analogy of ATMs. “Our aim with the hardware is to scale the recharging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Like cash dispensers, these can be located anywhere for providing charging facilities to electric vehicles.

” Power Hero is aggressively developing the technology around networking the EV grid. Their strategy is to license patented technology and partner with EV charging companies and state and local governments to make the existing grid much more efficient.
  • Our goal is to create the opportunity for people that own EVs or are planning on buying one to connect to electrical access points and charge their vehicle without any hindrance

Alongside the hardware, the company offers EV drivers access to the Power Hero app. By downloading and installing the Power Hero app on their phones, users can find and reserve a charging station, immediately, for a few hours, or overnight. The application shows users all the available public and private stations on the Power Hero network. An EV driver can select the location of their choice, review the location details, reserve the charging station, pay, and navigate, all via the Power Hero app. “Connecting to Power Hero’s peer-to-peer economy-sharing platform means EV owners will have immediate access to a wide network of thousands of charging stations in the U.S.,” adds Kent.

GETTING THE EV EXPERIENCE RIGHT

Another crown jewel of Power Hero is its proprietary 4G LTE device, CameoTM, which, in essence, is an adapter that EV owners can plug on to the nozzle of a charger and immediately convert any level 2 EV charger into a connected, reservable, revenue-generating charging station. The current North American standard for electrical connectors for EVs is the SAE J1772. CameoTM can be seamlessly integrated with the SAE J1772, enabling the rapid growth of the number of public charging stations without expensive infrastructure, or even an “Airbnb® of private home chargers.

” Presently, about 52 percent of the one million EV owners in the U.S. I have a Level 2 EVSE charging station in their homes, including multi-tenant residences, as well as places of business.

Between these and private business chargers, there are over 500k private charging stations that can be made accessible for EV owners experiencing range anxiety. CameoTM can easily bridge this supply to demand gap and unlock the full potential of the EV market.
"Using Power Hero, consumers can reserve a charging station as well as manage access and transactions"
What further sets CameoTM apart is the fact that it can automatically network itself to Power Hero’s command center and make a charging equipment reservable and accessible only to the individual that makes the reservation. “CameoTM has been our most exciting development. It provides the ability for landlords, business owners, and municipalities to network their chargers and makes it easy for drivers to find them,” informs Kent.

BROADENING THE HORIZON OF EVS

The different hardware and software solutions offered by Power Hero are a result of the founding team’s vision to make it possible for everyone to own an electric vehicle. “There is electricity everywhere. Our goal is to create the opportunity for people that own EVs or are planning on buying one to connect to electrical access points and charge their vehicle without any hindrance,” mentions Goei. Furthermore, Power Hero plans to license out its technology to charging equipment companies and help the U.S. leapfrog on their goal of reaching 500,000 charging stations nationwide by 2030.

At the core of everything Power Hero does is its experienced team that has a proven track record with an expertise in clean energy and connected IoT products. All C-level members of the company have successfully managed start-ups and growth-phase companies with a proven ability to scale businesses both domestically and internationally. Their combined experience brings legacy partnerships with Fortune 500 companies that are eager to help them grow and innovate. “In addition, we also have a lot of remote resources within the East Coast and West Coast. Our people are skilled in areas of artificial intelligence, mechanical design, electronics, as well as people with a background from Cisco and Stanford. It’s a diverse group and we all share one common desire: we want to leverage the technology we have to move America forward towards a sustainable future,” asserts Kent.

ILLUMINATING THE PATH TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

CameoTM is in the final phase of development and Power Hero is looking forward to launching it commercially in the near future.

Furthermore, the firm intends to partner with peers in the industry that are solving problems associated with installing chargers and looking to better network. “There are several hundred charger companies out there, and we aim to partner with all of them to solve the problem of accessibility to electric vehicle charging,” wraps up Goei.
